GOP Turns on Trump Over Proposed Spirit Airlines Rescue

Fiscal conservatives rebuke the former president’s suggestion to bail out the struggling carrier, calling it a betrayal of free-market principles.

Trump suggested using taxpayer money to rescue Spirit Airlines.
Many Republican lawmakers and pundits condemned the idea as anti-free-market.
The proposal has created a rift within the GOP ahead of midterm elections.

The Proposal That Raised Eyebrows

Former President Donald Trump recently floated the idea of a federal bailout for Spirit Airlines, which has been teetering on the edge of bankruptcy amid mounting debt and operational challenges. In a series of social media posts, Trump argued that saving the low-cost carrier was necessary to preserve jobs and maintain competition in the airline industry.

But the proposal quickly drew fire from within his own party. Fiscal hawks and free-market advocates, who have long championed limited government intervention, accused Trump of abandoning core conservative principles.

Republican Backlash

Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri was among the first to voice opposition, tweeting, 'Bailing out corporations is not conservatism. Let the market work or let it fail.' Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina echoed the sentiment, calling the idea 'a slap in the face to every American who played by the rules.'

Even some of Trump’s usual allies, such as Senator Lindsey Graham, expressed skepticism. Graham noted that while he supports American businesses, taxpayer-funded rescues set a dangerous precedent.

A Deeper Divide

The controversy highlights a growing tension within the GOP between traditional fiscal conservatism and Trump’s more populist, interventionist tendencies. Some analysts see this as a preview of intra-party battles that could shape policy debates in the coming years.

For now, the Spirit Airlines bailout appears dead on arrival, but the rhetorical war over the soul of the Republican Party is just heating up.
