Provenance is moving from story to infrastructure

Luxury has always sold origin stories: a workshop, a material, a maker, a place and a lineage. What is changing is the level at which those stories can be operationalized. The European Union's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation creates a framework for Digital Product Passports that can hold product-specific information and be accessed electronically. GS1's traceability standard, developed for interoperable supply chains, treats traceability as the ability to follow the history, application or location of an object across its lifecycle. Together they point toward a model in which product history is not only campaign copy; it is structured data attached to an identifiable object.

For product provenance luxury brands have a commercial reason to take this seriously even before a specific rule compels a specific SKU. A durable identity can support after-sales service, material disclosure, authentication workflows and later resale. But those benefits depend on evidence quality. A beautiful scan experience that repeats unverifiable claims is still weak provenance. The design priority should therefore run in the opposite direction from a marketing launch: first define what events and claims need proof, then decide who can write them, how they are corrected and how long the identifier survives, and only then design the customer-facing experience.

The EU rule is a framework, not one universal deadline

The ESPR entered into force on July 18, 2024 and extends the EU's ecodesign framework across virtually all physical products, with specified exceptions. Its Digital Product Passport provisions are significant, but the legal mechanism matters. Article 9 says products need a passport in accordance with applicable delegated acts adopted for relevant product groups. Those acts can specify the data included, the data carrier, its placement and whether identity operates at model, batch or item level. In other words, the regulation establishes the architecture and authority for requirements; it does not mean that every handbag, watch, garment or piece of furniture already carries the same mandatory passport today.

The Commission's first 2025–2030 working plan makes the sequencing clearer. It lists textiles and apparel with an indicative 2027 timeline for adoption of product rules, while other groups have different schedules and footwear is being studied separately. 'Indicative adoption' is not the same as a universal compliance date, and future delegated acts will determine concrete requirements. Premium brands should follow the exact scope of those acts rather than building a compliance calendar from headlines. The more useful strategic signal is that structured product information, persistent identification and interoperable access are becoming part of European product governance.

Identity, provenance and sustainability are different claims

Three concepts are often collapsed in premium product marketing. Authentication asks whether the object is what it claims to be. Provenance asks what documented history can be associated with that object: materials, production, custody, service or other events. Sustainability asks about environmental or social performance and requires evidence appropriate to the claim. A persistent identifier can connect all three kinds of information, but it does not make them interchangeable. An authentic item can have uncertain material origin; a well-documented supply chain does not automatically establish low impact; and an environmental declaration does not prove that the physical item being scanned is genuine.

This distinction should shape the data model. Give identity facts, supplier declarations, certifications, measurements, repair events and marketing narratives different fields and different evidence status. Record who supplied each fact and when it was verified. Where a claim is an estimate, say so. Where a certification has a scope or expiration, preserve it. The premium experience can translate complexity into clear language, but it should not erase provenance boundaries. Buyer trust is more likely to survive an incomplete but candid record than a seamless interface that implies certainty the underlying evidence cannot support.

Traceability requires events, not just a QR code

GS1's Global Traceability Standard is useful because it is deliberately technology-neutral. It describes end-to-end traceability across events in production, aggregation, transport, distribution and lifecycle service, including maintenance, repair and overhaul. Its core logic is identify, capture and share. That reframes a common mistake: placing a serialized QR code on a product creates an identifier and access point, but it does not by itself create a trustworthy chain of history. The brand still needs to decide which events matter, who records them, which data elements are required and how trading partners exchange information without breaking the chain.

For premium goods, the event model can be selective rather than encyclopedic. A material lot enters production; a product receives a persistent identity; an atelier or facility completes a defined stage; quality control releases the item; a sale or ownership transfer occurs where appropriate; an authorized repair changes a component; a refurbishment is documented. Not every event needs to be public. The value comes from retaining a controlled internal record and exposing the right subset to the right audience. Regulators, repairers, resellers and consumers may need different views of the same underlying product history.

Authentication improves when the identifier is hard to detach from reality

A provenance system has two attack surfaces: the data and the bond between the data and the physical object. Even a perfect database is unhelpful if a genuine tag can be removed and attached to a counterfeit. Premium brands therefore need a threat model for the carrier and identifier: how easy it is to clone, transfer, photograph, emulate or replace; what happens when a tag is damaged; and which checks require a backend or expert inspection. The ESPR's technical design emphasizes persistent unique identifiers, physical data carriers and interoperable data, but a commercial authentication system may need additional anti-tamper or forensic controls depending on product value and risk.

This is where claims should stay conservative. A scan can verify that an identifier exists in an issuer's system and display records associated with it. It does not automatically prove that every physical attribute of the object is genuine. High-value resale may still require materials inspection, construction knowledge, serial consistency or chain-of-custody review. The strongest premium design explains the level of assurance rather than using one green checkmark for every question. 'Identifier recognized,' 'service record verified' and 'item authenticated after inspection' are three different states and should remain three different states.

Repair turns product history into a service asset

Repair is where provenance becomes visibly useful after the sale. The European Commission says new right-to-repair rules applying from July 31, 2026 give consumers rights for specified products that are technically repairable under EU law and add incentives such as a longer legal guarantee when repair is chosen in the liability period. Those rules are not a blanket luxury-fashion mandate, but they reinforce a broader policy direction toward longer product use and accessible repair. Separately, the ESPR says passport information can include repair activities, depending on the eventual product-specific requirements.

The strategic inference is straightforward: a persistent product identity can make an authorized repair record travel with a durable good. A workshop can record date, service type, replaced component and responsible party, subject to privacy and access design. That history can improve future service because technicians know what happened before, and it can reduce ambiguity when a seller later describes condition. The record should not reveal personal customer data by default, and it must distinguish an authorized event from a self-reported one. Provenance becomes premium when it reduces friction across years of ownership, not when it only animates the unboxing moment.

Resale can inherit evidence instead of starting from zero

Secondary markets repeatedly face an information reset: a product leaves the first owner with receipts, repairs, accessories and condition notes scattered across paper and inboxes. A persistent identity offers a way to preserve selected evidence while ownership changes. This is partly an inference from the lifecycle logic in GS1 and the DPP architecture rather than a guarantee of future resale practice. If an item-level record can retain manufacturing facts and verified service events, a reseller can begin due diligence from a better evidence base. That may lower search and verification friction even though it cannot remove the need for condition assessment or fraud controls.

Brands should design transfer carefully. Ownership is not the same as product identity, and a public record should not disclose a previous customer's personal data. A resale workflow may need a neutral product passport that persists, a separate account relationship that changes, and a controlled method for adding service or inspection events. It also needs a dispute process for stolen, duplicated or incorrectly linked items. The premium opportunity is not to turn every bag into a speculative token. It is to make legitimate products easier to understand and service across multiple ownership cycles without weakening privacy or evidence quality.

Luxury examples matter most when they reveal operating choices

Some premium groups are already experimenting with this infrastructure. LVMH has described Loro Piana extending a digital certification service to its André shirt, using a QR-accessed certificate to communicate main production steps and production details through the Aura Blockchain Consortium. The important observation is not that one technical stack has become the industry standard. It is that a brand is connecting a physical premium product to structured, product-specific history. That creates a customer experience, but it also forces operational questions about identifiers, supplier data, long-term hosting, governance and what the certificate actually attests.

The lesson for smaller premium brands is to copy the discipline, not the scale. Start with a product family where origin or craftsmanship is materially important and where records already exist. Choose two or three high-value facts that can be supported reliably. Add a durable identifier and a service event model. Test what happens when a supplier corrects data, a product is repaired, the carrier is damaged or a customer sells the item. A narrow provenance system that survives those edge cases is more valuable than a broad 'digital passport' that becomes stale after launch.

Build the premium layer on evidence governance

A credible implementation can be designed in five decisions. First, define the claim set: identity, material origin, production location, craft process, certification, service and ownership-related events. Second, establish persistent identifiers and the level at which they operate. Third, define event writers and evidence requirements so a supplier assertion is distinguishable from a brand-verified fact. Fourth, set access rights for customers, internal teams, repairers, resellers and authorities. Fifth, define correction, retention and continuity rules so the record survives software vendors, reorganizations and years of product use.

Only then should design turn provenance into a premium feature. The interface can be elegant, but it should show evidence status, dates and meaningful product history rather than a wall of sustainability adjectives. Track operational metrics: share of SKUs with complete required data, supplier-data exceptions, failed scans, disputed identities, repair events attached successfully and records transferred without privacy errors. Regulation is one reason to build this capability, but not the only one. Done carefully, provenance becomes a service layer linking manufacture, ownership, care and resale. Done carelessly, it is another marketing promise whose weak data will eventually be exposed.

  • Choose persistent identifiers and data carriers that can survive the expected product life.
  • Record critical supply-chain and service events with responsible parties and evidence fields.
  • Separate verified facts from supplier declarations, estimates and marketing interpretation.
  • Design permissions for consumers, repairers, resellers, regulators and internal teams.
  • Test how records are corrected, transferred and retained when a product is repaired or resold.

Questions and answers

Brands should keep identity, provenance and environmental-performance fields separate, identify who supplied each datum, and disclose the method or standard behind claims. The technology that carries information does not automatically validate the information itself.

How can provenance support repair and resale?

GS1's traceability framework explicitly includes maintenance, repair and overhaul events within a product's lifecycle. That supports a practical inference for premium goods: if a durable product identity is linked to controlled service records, an authorized repair can become part of a verifiable history rather than a disconnected receipt. The same history may help a later reseller or buyer evaluate an item, provided access rights and data quality are well designed. It does not eliminate expert inspection, ownership disputes or counterfeiting risk; it adds a structured evidence layer that can travel with the product.

Does provenance technology have to use blockchain?

No. GS1's traceability standard is technology-neutral and emphasizes interoperable identification, capture and sharing of traceability data. The EU ESPR likewise focuses on persistent identifiers, data carriers, interoperability and defined access rather than prescribing blockchain as the universal architecture. A brand should choose technology based on durability, governance, security, interoperability, cost and the ability to correct or preserve records. A cryptographically strong ledger can still contain a false supplier assertion if the input controls are weak. The harder design problem is trustworthy data governance, not selecting the most fashionable database.
